Instead of conventional plastic mulch, Juntos Farm covers its crop beds with a biodegradable film made from potato starch. The film helps the soil retain moisture and limits weed growth, and at the end of the season it breaks down in the soil, so there is no plastic to remove or dispose of. Plastic mulch is widely used in farming because it improves yields, but on an island like Ibiza the waste it leaves behind is difficult to manage and can end up in the soil and the sea.
With the support of the Consell Insular d'Eivissa, received since 2022, Juntos Farm has been able to extend the use of biodegradable mulch to more crops, cover the higher cost of biodegradable mulch compared with plastic.
